Lux Boutique Hotel

Lux Boutique hotel is an up market hotel inspired by the sport, Lacrosse. The sport was created by Native Americans and was originally known as stickball. It was first documented as Lacrosse in 1636. The sport was seen as a major event that took place over several days. The events were played over huge open areas between villages and goals with up to 100 and 100,000 players participating at any one time. The only rules of the game were that the ball was not to be touched by a player’s hand and that there were no boundaries. The sport has transformed significantly since this time. The lacrosse stick in particular has changed from what began as a wooden stick with woven string to what is now a plastic head with an interwoven string pocket with a hollow metal shaft. The game is now played in two teams of 10 players.
The historical shaped Lacrosse stick is the main inspiration used in the design of Lux Hotel. Curved forms created from the shape of the older sticks guide guests throughout the space and to the main feature bar area. The bar area is designed inside a large lacrosse stick. It is a lowered area wrapped with a Corian wall feature that curves around the shape of the stick. This feature wall represents the plastic material used in the design of the contemporary sticks while taking form of the historical version of the stick. The bar area has a marbled floor featuring patterns of the lacrosse stick with a circle in the middle representing the lacrosse ball. The timber bar has a sculptural representation of the lacrosse stick, also made of Corian on the front elevation. Curved timber walls taking the shape of the head of the lacrosse stick form the bathrooms which are at different heights. On the ceiling is a painting of a game of lacrosse being played by the Native Americans. As guests walk through the lobby they are immediately drawn to the detail within the painting. Timber elements shadow the main forms within the lobby on the ceiling. The patterns represent change in direction relating to the rapid movement in the game. This pattern is also represented on some of the walls. The lobby also features a light room with large sphere pendant lights. The individual pendants represent colours and materials within the game such as the timber in the sticks and metal from the shafts. The materials, colour palette and textures featured in the lobby represent the materials in the game and the marble floor ties them together giving it a more luxurious feel.
On the second floor of the hotel is the accommodation. There are four rooms, two large rooms suited for longer stays and two regular rooms suited for overnight or shorter stays. The rooms have been divided using a directional pattern which creates the hall way. The individual rooms have been designed taking the forms from the hotel lobby and transforming them into elements such as the kitchens, bedrooms and bathrooms and in smaller details such as the bathtubs which resemble the shape of the contemporary lacrosse stick head.
Overall the game is being played out in little events all throughout the hotel creating large and individual stories of Lacrosse for guests to enjoy.
